Are Elephants Really Lucky?

Elephants are magnificent creatures that have been admired by humans for centuries.

Elephants are known to have great intelligence and an excellent memory. The greek philosopher, Aristotle, in his biological studies observed that the elephant "surpassed all other creatures in their wisdom."

In African culture the elephant is seen as a symbol of power, strength and leadership.

In India and Southeast Asia elephants are seen as a powerful totem animal, symbolising both nobility and fertility.

Ganesha, the Hindu god of wisdom and success, is a well loved deity depicted with an elephant's head on a human body while Indra, the king of the gods and heavens, is seen riding upon a mythical white elephant. According to Ted Andrews in his book Animal Speak , the elephant served Indra in many ways. "As the god of warriors, the elephant was Indra’s super weapon. As the god of rain, Indra used the gray elephant to bring forth the monsoons."

In the early 20th century the elephant was adopted by American culture as a symbol of good luck. There is a common belief in the West that elephants were only "lucky" if their trunk is up. This apparently "showers the owner with good luck".

However, their appears to be no basis for this belief in Indian or Southeast Asian cultures so the "trunk up" could be merely a superstition. In Hinduism and Budhism the elephant goddeses are always depicted with the trunk down.

In India and China some people believe placing an elephant by the door will bring good luck and longevity. The elephant statue should face the door to ensure only good fortune passes through.

Other people believe that stroking the trunk of a household elephant statue will ensure success in business or on a journey.

In Fen Shui practices the elephant is often used to protect and energize certain areas of the home.

A single elephant statue or a pair of elephants may be placed at the front door for protection and to bring good luck and blessings upon the house. A pair of elephants in the bedroom can be used to promote fertility, love and fidelity. An elephant placed on a work desk in a home office can symbolise intelligence and calm under pressure.

Elephant charms are also popular worldwide. It is believed that strength and good fortune will come to the person wearing an elephant charm necklace or bracelet.
