Is it good feng shui to place elephants in your home?

There are no strict rules when it comes to choosing feng shui dieties or symbols for your home but elephants are often chosen because it is believed they can improve the luck, prosperity and fertility of those who live there.

The elephant has been an important figure in religion and mythology over the years.

In African and Asian countries the elephant is a symbol of power, intelligence, peace and prosperity. In African folklore, the elephant is often portrayed as the wise and gentle chieftain, the one who settles arguments between other jungle animals.

In India the Hindus worship Ganesha, also known as Ganapati, who is depicted as the elephant-headed god. Ganesha is the god of wisdom and learning and believed to be the "remover of obstacles." In Buddhism, the elephant represents mental strength and composure.

Both religious groups admire the specific qualities of elephants that make them a powerful role model for a spiritual life. Elephants are wise and loyal, obedient to their leader and become unstoppable when set on a path. They also have large ears to hear more than they speak!

Feng shui elephants can be placed around the house to energise the chi energy associated with different aspects of your life.

In most feng shui practices, the elephants are shown with the trunk up, as this is believed to the shower the house owners with good luck. Elephants with their trunks down are associted with fertility. If you want to use the elephant symbol as a token of love and friendship, look for elephants with intertwined trunks.

Read on to find out four ways that elephants can be used for feng shiu around the home.
1. Elephants at the Front Door
The entrance to your home has great significance and feng shui practitioners suggest placing a statue of an elephant (or a pair of elephants) at the front door, facing inwards, to bring good luck and prosperity into the house. Elephants placed facing out will offer protection and loss of chi energy from the house. If your entrance is too small for large statues you can place an elephant on a shelf or small table near the door.

2. Elephants in the Bedroom

You can display a pair of elephants in the bedroom to enhance love and fidelity between couples. This could be in the form of two statues or you could place two elephant cushions on your bed to promote a harmonious relationship.

Placed on a beside table next to the bed an elephant can help to promote fertility. It is suggested that you choose an elephant with its trunk down which helps it to accumulate and store enough energy to push through various obstacles. Alternatively you can place a pair of elephants on either side of your bedroom door to welcome in the "baby's" energy.

Sometimes a family of seven elephants are placed in the bedroom for fertility since the number seven symbolises children in feng shui. An elephant mother and baby statue is another way to represent fertility.

3. Elephants in a Child's Room
Elephants are known for their intelligence and excellent memory. You can place elephant symbols in a child's room or the living room to activate the energies of knowledge and help them to perform better academically.

The elephant symbol could be in the form of a small statue on your child's desk or another form of elephant decor such as a picture, colorful cushion covers or a floor rug.

To enhance the realtionship between mother and child you could place a duo of mother and baby elephant on a child's study desk or bookshelf. Elephants are dedicated parents who take exceptionally good care of their young. A mother and baby elephant symbolises the love and bonding between a mother and her children.

4. Elephants in a Home Office

Elephants symbolise wisdom and power. They are believed to promote good fortune in your personal and business life. To enhance the growth of your business, or career, place an elephant statue at the door of your office to bring positive energy to this work space.

Place an elephant on your work desk near your work diary to promote leadership qualities and help you perform under pressure. Alternatively place your elephant statue near the window, facing inwards, to allow lucky Chi or good energy to be dispersed around the room.

For this purpose it is suggested you display elephants with their trunk up to attract good luck, success and prosperity.

To bring more balance into your work life feng shui practitioners suggest you display a statue of an elephant that is holding something by its trunk, such as a crystal ball.
